Quote1 The Armored Titan specializes in hardening. If it charges in at full speed, the gates of any wall will crumble. Quote2
— A Marleyan analysis of the Armored Titan[2]

The Armored Titan (鎧の巨人 Yoroi no Kyojin?) was one of the Nine Titans that possessed armored plates of skin across its body. It was an elusive threat to humanity within the Walls, first appearing to them in 845 during the fall of Wall Maria.

Abilities

Armored skin

The defining feature of the Armored Titan was the all-encompassing layer of plated, armor-like segments of hardened skin protecting the Titan body. This armor was capable of protecting the Titan from significant amounts of damage, even a direct hit from a cannon[3] or the ultrahard steel blades of ODM gear.[4] However, the armor had some limitations and was incapable of protecting the user from high-power weaponry such as the Mid-East Allied Forces' anti-Titan artillery.[1] Along with providing formidable physical protection, the armor could also be used offensively, dealing devastating damage upon impact,[4] and was even strong enough to ram through the gates of the Walls.[3]

The primary disadvantage of the Armored Titan's skin was the decreased speed of the Titan form. Whether due to increased weight or restrained movement, the Armored Titan was incapable of moving at high speeds when completely armored. This could be alleviated if the user chose to shed segments of the armor to increase movement capability and speed, such as the armor behind the knees.[4]

A lesser-known disadvantage was that if the holder of the Founding Titan wished to, they were able to cause the hardened skin of the Armored Titan to crumble away to nothing; this left the Titan prone and extremely vulnerable to damage. However, this only seemed to apply to the current body created by transforming, as transforming into the Armored Titan later revealed it to be restored of its namesake armor.

Hardening

Similar to the Female Titan, the Armored Titan was capable of utilizing crystal-like hardening around its body to at least some extent. The Armored Titan could also use this ability to create claws on its hands and feet which could be used to scale the Wall of Shiganshina District with ease.[5]

History

The Armored Titan, like all the Nine Titans, was brought into the world after the death of Ymir Fritz. In the 1,700 years following her death, the Armored Titan was held in the possession of one or several of the warring Eldian houses subservient to the Founding Titan. After these seventeen centuries when Karl Fritz, the 145th king of the Fritz family, abandoned the conflicts of Eldia and relocated to Paradis Island, the Armored Titan was taken by the nation of Marley during the Great Titan War.[6]

In the year 843, Reiner Braun was chosen to inherit the power of the Armored Titan. He would later make use of his Titan form in a war between Marley and an enemy nation, using his Armored Titan to take the brunt of enemy artillery fire.[2]

In the year 845, the nation of Marley sent out Reiner, Bertholdt Hoover, Annie Leonhart, and Marcel Galliard across the sea to Paradis Island as the start of the Paradis Island Operation.[2]

Story

The Fall of Shiganshina arc

Armored Titan's appearance

The Armored Titan first appears

The Armored Titan first appears in the year 845, shortly after the Colossal Titan first breaches the south gate of Wall Maria, participating in the attack on Shiganshina district. During the chaos of the initial breach, Reiner's Armored Titan enters the city and makes its way across the streets to the north gate. Once there, it charges towards the gate and smashes through it, allowing Titans to invade Wall Maria.[3] Reiner joined his fellow surviving Warriors in entering the walled territory during the chaos, and he would not use the Armored Titan for another five years.[2]

Clash of the Titans arc

When Reiner, in a moment of exhaustion and desperation, reveals himself to be the Armored Titan and exposes Bertholdt as the Colossal Titan, the two transform into their Titan forms and battle against the Scout Regiment. Reiner's Armored Titan captures Eren Jaeger, descending from Wall Rose with the recruit in his grip until Eren transforms into his own Titan, ready to battle.[7]

The Armored Titan initially overpowers Eren's Titan until it makes use of a technique that was taught to him by Annie Leonhart while they were cadets. This allows him close enough to grapple with the Armored Titan and break off his right arm. Eren retreats to the Wall to avoid capture, but the Armored Titan charges after it. Hange Zoë realizes that the Armored Titan cannot be completely armored if it is able to move that quickly and must have weak points like in the joints of a suit of armor. While the two Titans grapple, Mikasa Ackermann cuts through the back of the Armored Titan's knee, weakening its ability to fight. Eren's hold begins to break through the Armored Titan's plating, threatening to tear off its head. With defeat imminent, the Armored Titan roars, signaling Bertholdt's Colossal Titan, which falls on the two Titans.[4] This allows Reiner the opportunity to bite Eren out of his Titan and escape while the Scout Regiment is unable to stop them.[8]

Reiner and Bertholdt take a break in a Forest of Giant Trees, but when the Scouts pursue them sooner than expected they flee using their omni-directional mobility gear because Reiner says his Armored Titan is too slow. He refrains from using it until they get to the edge of the forest, and then he transforms. Bertholdt, carrying a captured Eren, and Ymir in her Titan form, carrying Historia, ride on his shoulders.[9]

The soldiers chase after them on horseback and Reiner is not fast enough to outrun them. When they begin attacking, Bertholdt calls for him to protect them and Reiner closes the Armored Titan's hands over Bertholdt and Eren, so they cannot be taken by the scouts. However, he was clueless to the fact that Commander Erwin Smith was leading a horde of Titans into him.[10]

Though he tries to charge through, the Armored Titan is overwhelmed and forced to a standstill due to the sheer numbers of Titans that grab on to him. Realizing that he will gradually be worn down, Reiner lifts his hands to bash away the Titans, though it exposes Bertholdt and Eren and ultimately allows Eren to be rescued.[10]

Titans charge at the Armored Titan

Titans start attacking the Armored Titan

Unable to immediately chase after the fleeing soldiers, Reiner begins throwing Titans at the Scouts in order to stop them, apparently not caring if Eren is eaten.[10] Gradually, he removes enough that the Armored Titan can begin moving again. In the middle of the fighting, Eren strikes one of the Titans and activates the Founding Titan that Reiner was searching for. Reiner charges at him, but Eren's outburst causes the Titans to focus their attacks on him and Bertholdt.[11]

The Armored Titan survives the battle and Reiner retreats to Wall Maria along with Bertholdt and Ymir.[11]

The Armored Titan is defeated by the Beast Titan

Some time later, Reiner's Armored Titan battles Zeke's Beast Titan over their next course of action. The Armored Titan is soundly defeated in the brawl, and Zeke states that they will wait in Shiganshina for the arrival of the Scout Regiment rather than attempting to rescue Annie Leonhart.[12]

Return to Shiganshina arc

Three months after the Struggle for Trost, the Scout Regiment arrives in Shiganshina and seal the southern breach using a new hardening ability acquired by Eren's Titan. Suspecting that the Warriors may be nearby, Armin Arlelt proposes a search of the Wall and Reiner is found hiding within. As he is brutally attacked by Captain Levi, Reiner still manages to transform into the Armored Titan[13] after using a last-resort ability to transfer his brain functions to the entirety of his body.

The Armored Titan battles Eren once more

As the battle of Shiganshina District begins, Reiner hardens his fingers to climb Wall Maria in order to attack the Scouts' horses. However, Eren's Titan appears in the city and Reiner is left with a choice, and he chooses to confront Eren. The Armored Titan fights against Eren for a second time.[5]

Eren's new ability to harden his Titan's skin successfully deals heavy damage to the Armored Titan, but the greatest damage is dealt from the Thunder Spears, a new explosive weapon developed by the Corps of Engineers in recent months. The explosives tear through the armor of Reiner's nape and destroy his brain, though his consciousness transfer once again keeps him alive. The Armored Titan calls for plan B, the Colossal Titan, and shortly thereafter Bertholdt arrives at Reiner's side, telling him to lie down on his back for the time being.[14]

While Bertholdt confronts the Scouts, Reiner follows Bertholdt's advice and the Armored Titan lies down on its back, protecting Reiner from further harm and allowing for him to regenerate his body.[14] A short while later, Reiner fully heals his brain and the Armored Titan returns to the fight,[15] but with no memory of any events that had occurred since earlier that morning. Squad Levi attacks Reiner with the Thunder Spears again, incapacitating it and successfully bursting Reiner from the nape of the Armored Titan.[16]

Marley arc

Reiner and Galliard take control of the fort

The Armored Titan assaults Fort Slava

Four years later, Reiner is present at the battle of Fort Slava at the climax of the Marley Mid-East War, waiting on standby in an airship due to the presence of anti-Titan artillery on the ground below. Once the ground infantry succeed in destroying the armored train carrying the artillery around the fortress, Reiner eventually joins the combat as the Armored Titan after a Titan airstrike sent down with the power of Zeke's Beast Titan. Alongside Porco Galliard's Jaw Titan, the Armored Titan decimates the anti-Titan artillery set up on the walls of the fortress. When the coast is clear, Reiner's Titan signals for the Beast Titan to join the battle, where it throws spare artillery at the Mid-East Allied Forces' navy stationed in the bay nearby. However, when the ships begin to open fire on the Beast Titan, Reiner uses his Armored Titan as a shield for Zeke, receiving devastating damage in the process.[1]

Reiner appears to stop Eren

A partially transformed Armored Titan appears to engage the Attack Titan

Later on, as Eren transforms into the Attack Titan, Reiner bites his hand to form a partially transformed Titan to protect Falco.[17] After hearing the screams of both Gabi and Falco, Reiner transforms into a partially armored titan to engage the Attack Titan.[18]

War for Paradis arc

One month after the Raid on Liberio, Marley launches a counterattack on Paradis Island. Reiner parachutes from a Marley airship down to Shiganshina. He sees Eren's Attack Titan and uses a cut on his palm to transform into the Armored Titan in order to fight him.

Reiner braces for Eren's attack

The Armored Titan braces for the Attack Titan

Reiner lands as Eren charges him and they start fighting. Reiner is overpowered by Eren, who manages to break through his armor using his hardened fists. Reiner manages to restrain Eren as Porco's Jaw Titan attacks Eren from behind, but Eren uses the power of the War Hammer Titan to impale both warriors with hardened spikes. Theo Magath uses the Cart Titan's new anti-Titan cannon to shoot the Attack Titan in the head, paralyzing him. Reiner frees himself and uses the spike that had impaled him to stab the Attack Titan through the chest,[19] before attempting to devour Eren.[20] However, Reiner is stopped as Eren manages to get a hold of his Titan's head and hold him off. As the two begin a struggle, the Armored Titan is knocked off of his adversary by a projectile thrown by the Beast Titan.[20]

Bitten

The Armored Titan gets bitten in the nape by a transformed Falco

The Armored Titan is caught in a daze but eventually recovers and targets the Attack Titan once more. However, it is caught in a barrage of projectiles thrown by the Beast Titan, tearing it apart.[20] After recovering, the Armored Titan resumes fighting Eren and attempts to rouse Galliard within the mangled Jaw Titan. Soon after, Zeke lets out a scream that transforms all the affected Eldians into Pure Titans; immediately, the Armored Titan is set upon by the newly transformed Falco Grice. Caught by surprise, the Armored Titan struggles to control both the Attack Titan and Falco. After the Beast Titan is shot by General Magath a second time, Reiner believes that Zeke is finally dead and as such, loosens the armor around the nape of the Armored Titan. However, the transformed Falco ceases in biting the nape and instead targets a nearby Galliard, who is unable to sufficiently heal his wounds. The Armored Titan soon finds itself trapped in the hardened shell of the Attack Titan; breaking free, it tries to crush Eren but its hand gets struck and blown apart by a Thunder Spear.[21]

After Reiner regains consciousness, he joins the combined group of the Scout Regiment and Warriors who go down to the harbor to attack the Jaegerists and take the Flying boat.[22] After their initial plan fails, Reiner and Annie transform into their Titan forms and engage the incoming enemies.[23]

Titans vs jaegerists

The Armored Titan and the Female Titan engage the Jaegerists

Both Titans saw initial success as they repelled the Jaegerists attacks from the Thunder Spears and gunshots from the Anti-Personnel omni-directional mobility gear, however, when the Azumabito engineers enter the battlefield trying to make it to the boat, Reiner is forced to use his Titan's body to protect them leading to his nape being exposed after various Thunder Spears are fired. Later, when the Female Titan is in trouble, the Armored Titan uses his face to block them and takes the impact causing his facial armor to be destroyed followed by the rest of his face and his arms being destroyed. Just before he is finished off, Conny Springer kills the incoming Jaegerists which then allowed Pieck's Cart Titan and Falco's Jaw Titan to dismember the enemies.[24]

After arriving to Fort Salta, Reiner jumps out of the flying boat and transforms mid-air into the Armored Titan to engage the Beast Titan that is throwing projectiles towards the flying boat. The Armored Titan successfully puts a stop to the Beast Titan and engages it through hand to hand combat.[25] The Armored Titan successfully puts a stop to the Beast Titan and engages it through hand to hand combat. The Titan forms of previous inheritors begin to spawn from the back of the Founder Titan and the Armored Titan eventually gets overwhelmed; Reiner notices with surprise when several Titans begin fighting the others, including both Galliard brothers and Ymir's Jaw Titans. When Jean is able to detonate the explosives located at the neck of the Founding Titan, the Armored Titan lunges towards the creature emerging from the neck and tackles it to the ground, trying to prevent it from reconnecting with the severed head.

Titan vs the worm

Having withstood the Colossal Titan explosion that destroyed the remains of the Founding Titan, Reiner heads towards the creature which also survived the blast. The anomaly then emits a gas, transforming all nearby Eldians into Pure Titans. Reiner tries to fight them off but is overwhelmed shortly before the power of Titans vanishes, and the Armored Titan does so as well.[26]

Trivia

  • In a blog post, Isayama revealed that Reiner's Titan image (the Armored Titan) was actually based on Brock Lesnar, an American professional wrestler, and former Mixed Martial Artist.[27]
  • From season 3-onwards, the Armored Titan and Keiji share the same voice actor.
