Quote1 Grisha... I... no matter what I become... don't worry. I'll find you. Quote2
— Dina to Grisha Yeager as she is about to be transformed into a mindless Titan.[1]

Dina Yeager (ダイナ・イェーガー Daina Yēgā?), née Fritz (フリッツ Furittsu?) was a descendant of the royal family[2] and was a working member of the Eldia Restorationists before they were found out by the Marley government.[3] Dina was the first wife of Grisha Yeager and is the mother of Zeke Yeager.[4]

Dina was a small woman; petite in her frame and relatively short. Her eyes were large and light in color as was her fair skin. Dina’s blonde hair passes her cheek bones but does not reach her shoulders and is kept parted down the middle. It is a bit longer in the back than it is in the front and has some layers to it.

Dina usually wore a long ankle length skirt with a white button up blouse,[2] but could be seen wearing a cloak[5] or a black coat over top sometimes. She has also paired this with a scarf over her hair and head. Like all other residents of the Liberio Internment Zone, she was forced to wear a white arm band on her left arm with the symbol that indicates she is an Eldian.[6]

When taking a family photo, Dina was seen with her hair in an up-do, keeping her bangs still middle parted but pinned back. For this formal occasional she wears a long dress, light into color, with thick cuffs around the wrists with frills embroidered around the neck and chest area.[7]

Dina's Titan was very tall and, like most regular Titans, resembled a male human. Its main distinguishing feature was its characteristic, grinning smile, in which its lips are fixed wide open, exposing its teeth and gums within at all times.

Dina's Titan had a thin, emaciated frame with stocky proportions, in which its ribs were visibly apparent, and it possessed an unusually-long neck. It had medium-length, dark hair that only barely reached down to its neck and featured small, deeply sunken dark brown eyes.

Not much is known about Dina, however it can be deduced that she was a very loyal follower to the Eldia Restorationists. She had a generally soft expression, sometime plagued with worry. Despite Dina admitted that the purpose of Zeke's birth was to lead to Eldia Restorationists, she appeared to love her son deeply, and was horrified to learn Zeke was the one who turned them over to the authorities.[1]

Dina showed to love Grisha Yeager unconditionally, as she appeared to be very elated by the time they were married, and even when the Restorationists' were banished and turned into mindless Titans, she promised Grisha that she would find him again no matter what happened to her. Her love for him was returned, as Grisha was very distraught and heartbroken to see her become a Titan.

Dina gets involved

Dina gets involved with the Eldia Restorationists

Dina first appears as a person sent to the Eldia Restorationists by "the Owl", an unknown mole in the Marley government working for them. She introduces herself as a member of the royal family. It is explained that a branch of the royal family refused to flee to the island of Paradis with King Fritz at the end of the Great Titan War and Dina was the only remaining member of that group. She and her family remained inside the Liberio Internment Zone in hiding while they waited for the day that Eldians would regain power.[8]

Dina brought the revivalists information that was revolutionary. She explained that the founding Titan was taken with King Fritz to Paradis and that it was the key to controlling all of the other Titans and Eldia's restoration. She goes on to say that the reason for his retreat was his refusal to fight. This prompts Grisha to declare that they will fight for the return of their power.[9]

A year later, Grisha and Dina married and had a child who they named Zeke Yeager. They found their turning point when the Marley government began searching for child warriors age five to seven to take on the powers of the seven Titans they had control over so that they could demolish King Fritz' kingdom before he could wreak havoc on the world with an Eldian reign of terror. The families of these warriors were offered Marley citizenship.[10]

During a meeting of the Eldia Restorationists, they read a letter from 'The Owl' that claims the Marley government wishes to taken King Fritz' land is so that they may harvest fossil fuels in preparation for the time when the control they maintain with their seven Titans is no longer absolute. Grisha then reads words left behind by King Fritz' eighty years ago they claimed that if anyone dare try to attack his land, tens of millions of sleeping Titans inside the Walls would flatten the Earth. This reveals that the Marley government's true goal is to enter the Walls and steal the founding Titan. Grisha then decides the best course of action would be to put his and Dina's son, Zeke, into the Titan program as a mole for the Eldia Restorationists. However, when the boy turned seven, he betrayed his parents to the government. Dina, Grisha, and the rest of the Eldia Restorationists were sent to Utopia and sentenced to become mindless man-eating Titans on the island of Paradis for the rest of time; where they would prey on their own kind.[11]

Dina becomes a Titan

Dina becomes a Titan

After being sent to Utopia with the Eldia Restorationists, Dina was brought next to Grisha and when she saw him she told him not to worry and that no matter what she becomes, she will still find him. Sergeant Major Gross then injected Dina with the Titan serum and she was thrown off the Borderline Wall to Utopia, as Grisha, in horror, watched his wife turn into a Titan. Distraught and helpless to watch Dina wonder off after Grice, Gross taunted Grisha by saying that she must have been more attracted to Grice rather than him. After Krueger's true allegiance is revealed he tells Grisha that he kept her status as Ymir Fritz's descendant secret, as she most likely would have been forced to bare children to inherit to Founding Titan for the rest of her life.[12]

Fall of Shiganshina arc

Eren sees Kalura get eaten

Dina eats Carla Yeager

After the Colossus Titan breaches Shiganshina District in Wall Maria, many Titans proceed inside and among them is Dina. She embarks inside the town and is seen by Eren and Mikasa as they try to free Carla Yeager, who is trapped under the debris of their house. Though Hannes initially comes to their aid and decides to face Dina, he stands catatonic in fear of her frightening appearance. After he realizes that he is too afraid to face it, he opts to instead take Eren and Mikasa to safety, leaving Eren's mother behind. Afterwards, Eren witnesses Dina pull Carla out of the debris, as it proceeds to violently incapacitate her and devour her shortly thereafter.[13]

Clash of the Titans arc

Smiling Titan death

Dina is torn apart and eaten

Five years later, after Eren had already joined the Survey Corps, Dina appears again before Eren and Mikasa outside the Titan Forest during the military's pursuit of the Armored Titan. After killing Hannes, who was protecting Eren and Mikasa before he was devoured, the Titan reaches out for Eren, who punches its hand. This activates powers Eren was previously unaware of, and seemingly gains control over the surrounding Titans. The ones that are under his control proceed to kill Dina by ripping her to shreds and devouring her, avenging the deaths of Carla and Hannes.[14]

The Uprising arc

As Squad Levi is preparing to battle Titan Rod Reiss, Eren sees three children looking at the top of the Walls. He mentions those kids are just like he, Mikasa, and Armin when the Titans first attacked. Armin replies the only difference is that they, soldiers, are atop the Wall to stop the Titan. This prompts Eren to think back to the day they first saw Dina. He realizes how much Armin and Mikasa have grown, and begins punching himself for being a "useless brat".[15]

Return to Shiganshina arc

After the battle in Shiganshina District between the Beast Titan's army and the Survey Corps, a few of the remaining members, Hange Zoë, Levi Ackerman, Eren Yeager, and Mikasa Ackerman, locate three books inside Grisha Yeager's basement.[16] On the opening page of the first book that they look at is a photograph of Dina, Grisha, and Zeke. A note on the back of the photograph reveals its true nature and tells the scouts that humanity has not perished outside of their Walls.[17] After the Survey Corps' return to Trost District, Eren sees his father's memories in his dreams and comes to the realization that Dina was the Titan that killed his mother.[18]

Anime and Manga Differences

  • The scene of Carla Yeager's death is depicted slightly different in the anime than in the manga. In the manga, Dina squeezes her until her back breaks, making her vomit her own blood, and twitch in her hand before she ate her.[20] In the anime, she simply breaks her back by bending her backwards before biting her with a loud crunch, with blood specks flying in the air.[21]

  • Dina means "day" in Sanskrit and "judged" in Hebrew.
  • Dina is one of the two mindless Titans shown to kill a victim before devouring them.[20]
