Furlan Church (ファーラン・チャーチ Fāran Chāchi?) was one of Levi's companions prior to joining the Scout Regiment, the other being Isabel Magnolia.

Appearance

Furlan was a young man of average height with light gray eyes and dark blond hair. His bangs hung over his forehead in between his eyes. Before he joined the Scout Regiment, Furlan's civilian clothes featured a simple long-sleeve white shirt with a light blue vest and knee-high boots.

Personality

Furlan, in contrast to Isabel, was very focused and able to make the distinction between when to have fun and when to be serious. Like Levi, Furlan was usually depicted as level-headed and calm, but he disliked when things got out of control. He had a clear understanding of when he was defeated, and stopped resisting if he knew that he had lost; this was shown during his capture by the Scout Regiment. Furlan placed a great deal of trust in Levi and followed his decisions and leadership without question.[2]

History

Prior to the fall of Wall Maria, Furlan was a delinquent roaming the capital's Underground District. At one point, Furlan decided to test Levi's strength by having him fight a group of thugs. Furlan's plan was to see if Levi was worth recruiting into his group of thugs or not, and he was surprised to see Levi beat them all single-handedly.[2]

After one of many heists pulled with Levi's gang, Furlan was placed in charge of dividing the profits from the job among his comrades. Knowing that Yan was suffering from a leg injury and would need extra money to afford medicine, Furlan gave Yan a larger cut compared to everyone else's. Noticing this, Levi requested to know why Furlan had been giving Yan preferential treatment. Then Furlan's explanation was interrupted by the arrival of a young girl at their hideout's doorstep.

Seeing that she was being pursued, Furlan and Levi stood up for her to her attackers, chasing them off with ease. After treating her injuries, Furlan and Levi agreed to allow Isabel to join their gang and began training her to use omni-directional mobility gear.

The three were later contacted by Nicholas Lovof, who offered them the chance to leave the Underground and live above ground if they infiltrate the Scout Regiment and kill Erwin Smith.

Story

A Choice with No Regrets: Part One

Levi and Erwin make a deal

Furlan and his friends enter the Scout Regiment

In order to attract the attention of the scouts, the trio make use of their ODM gear to pull off a heist. They are initially accosted by members of the Military Police, but as the gang flees they are suddenly set upon by members of the Scout Regiment. Levi orders them to split up to try to avoid capture, but Furlan and Isabel are both swiftly detained.

The two are brought by their captors to Erwin, who has also detained Levi. Erwin begins questioning them about their skill with ODM gear, but the three refuse to talk. It is only after Miche Zacharius begins physically harassing Levi that Furlan acquiesces and explains that they are self taught. Impressed, Erwin offers them a chance to join the Scout Regiment and Levi begrudgingly accepts on their behalf.[2]

A Choice with No Regrets: Part Two

Furlan and his comrades are formally introduced to the rest of the Scout Regiment and assigned to Flagon's squad. Flagon and Levi quickly begin to grate on each other's nerves, and Furlan is forced to step in as a mediator between them to stop a fight from breaking out while Flagon is showing them to their rooms.

While Levi and Isabel act as lookouts, Furlan tries to infiltrate Erwin's office and steal the incriminating documents he has on Lovof. However, Erwin arrives before he can find anything, and he is forced to give up his search.

Reconvening with his comrades, Furlan theorizes that Erwin is carrying the documents on his person at all times to ensure their safety, and suggests forcibly taking the documents and killing him during a scouting mission. Levi objects to Furlan and Isabel participating in the scouting mission, but the two insist that they would rather leave the walls with him than return to the Underground, and convince him to allow them to participate.

Furlan's first kill

The next day, the Scout Regiment embarks on its 23rd Exterior Scouting Mission. As soon as the scouts exit the gates of Wall Maria, the trio are left awed at the sight of the open world beyond the Walls. Their reverie is cut short by an encounter with Titans very early into the mission. Furlan assists Levi in taking down an Abnormal Titan. While obviously nervous and unsettled at the thought of fighting a Titan, he gained his courage and morale upon seeing Levi charge into battle. Isabel distracts another Titan while Furlan finishes it off, marking his first kill.

A heavy rainstorm soon begins, and Levi decides to use the cover provided by the rain to assassinate Erwin. Not wanting their absence to draw the rest of their squad's attention, Furlan and Isabel agree to stay behind.

Furlan's death

Immediately after Levi leaves, Furlan and Isabel are ambushed by an Abnormal Titan, which quickly kills both of them. Levi returns in time only to watch in horror as the Titan bites Furlan's body in half.

During the Battle of Shiganshina, as Erwin Smith begins to lament the dwindling hopes of his dream, Furlan stands among the many fallen Scout Regiment comrades in Erwin's mind, wanting to know if their deaths had meaning.[3]

Abilities

Furlan stole omni-directional mobility gear and, along with Levi and Isabel, trained himself to the point of proficiency and used it on their underground missions. He almost escaped from a Scout Regiment squad, mankind's greatest soldiers, and he stated that he, Levi, and Isabel had escaped from the Military Police several times before.[2]

He seemed to be smart and skillful, as seen when he confessed that he trained himself with the omni-directional mobility gear and in his ability to keep a cool head.[1]

Relationships

  • Levi - Having heard rumors of Levi's strength, Furlan originally set up a test to see how strong he was. He was amazed at Levi's skill and hoped he could convince him to join his gang.[2] After Levi refused, he joined up with Levi instead. The two became close friends, with Levi greatly valuing Furlan's opinions and strategies.
  • Isabel Magnolia - Though they were usually at constant odds with each other, they were close friends and showed a great level of cooperation and synchronization. With few words between them, they operate with extreme precision.[1]
  • Yan - Furlan cared for Yan's health and worried so much about Yan's leg injuries that he paid Yan more than his share. Yan being taken to a hospital and treated on the surface was the reason for Furlan, Levi, and Isabel to take on the mission that led them to join the Scout Regiment.
