|Squad Leader, please stay back!! You were really gonna die!|
|— Moblit panics as Hange Zoë's recklessness almost gets her killed again|
Moblit Berner (モブリット・バーナー Moburitto Bānā?) was a veteran member of the Survey Corps and the squad executive officer (分隊副長 Buntai Fukuchō?) of the Survey Corps Fourth Squad, under the command of Hange Zoë. He also served as Hange's assistant and messenger.
Moblit had short smooth light hair parted down the middle. He was of average height and build, but often carried a worried expression due to his superior officer's wild and impulsive personality. Moblit wore the typical uniform of a member of the Survey Corps with a button up shirt underneath, but he was sometimes seen wearing black pants with a white button down. On missions, he would wear the Survey Corps green cloak.
Moblit came across as an intelligent and responsible person, which may have been the reason he was tasked to keep his overzealous and eccentric superior out of trouble. Much of the time, this left him in a state of near-panic, having to constantly remind Hange to be more careful or yanking her to safety. That he remained at her side constantly suggested he was a loyal person, regardless of the stress involved with being under her command. However he was able to show signs of a serious nature when it came to missions, such as the time he twisted Peaure's hand when he was taking notes or when he held Djel Sannes' chair down when he was being tortured.
StoryHange Zoë's assistant, standing nearby as she attempts to establish communication with the captured Titans whom she named Sonny and Bean. He is immensely panicked by Hange's seemingly reckless attempts to get the two Titans to respond to her, repeatedly telling her to step back. Sometime later, Hange purposefully jabs Bean in the heart with a long pole in order to determine the Titan's reaction to pain, screaming whilst doing so. Moblit is worried over her reaction, to which she responds that seeing Bean in such pain is what is causing her to scream and be so upset. Later on, another attempt at establishing communication with Sonny nearly causes him to bite her head off, and Moblit drags her away with fear while exclaiming that she will most certainly die if she does not exercise caution.
After being once again summoned to the grounds where the Titans were being kept, Hange is in disarray at the sight of their murder. As she screams, Moblit attempts to calm her down from the side lines.
Moblit takes part in the 57th expedition outside the Walls. He is assigned to the soldiers lying in wait for the Female Titan and is among them after she has been captured. As Levi Ackerman intimidates the Female and tells her of his plans to dismember her real body, the Female Titan lets out a deafeningly loud roar which causes Moblit and Hange to cover their ears as the Titan shrieks. After the roar, Moblit wonders aloud if it was a death rattle, and is surprised to see numerous Titans begin to swarm the area and attack the female. When they begin to devour her, Commander Erwin Smith orders all squad to engage the Titans and defend the Female to the death. Moblit fights relentlessly among his comrades but to no avail. The Commander, realizing that all is lost, orders his soldiers to pull back and return to Karanes District.
The Survey Corps again attempt to capture the Female Titan, this time in Stohess District where they believe she is hiding. With Armin Arlert's help, they single out Annie Leonhart as their suspect. With their suspicions correct, Eren Yeager successfully manages to incapacitate Annie during the raid on Stohess. Moblit stands nearby, grabbing Hange's shoulders in a state of panic as the surrounding soldiers attempt to extract Annie from the nape of her Titan. However, Annie's last resort to crystallize herself makes her impossible to extract information from. Shortly after, Moblit is among those instructed to move Annie to a safer place where she could be held. When the soldiers notice that there is a Titan within the Wall, he frantically runs toward Hange, asking for her orders. After the Titan is successfully covered, Moblit is present as Hange questions Nick as to why the Titan was inside the Wall in the first place. When Hange holds Nick over the edge of Wall, he attempts to stop her, only to be told to stay back. When Hange throws Nick back onto the Wall, Moblit approaches Hange and attempts to speak with her, to which she responds that she just had a feeling she had not felt since she first stepped outside the Walls, remarking that it is terrifying.
He is present in a flashback in which Hange is comparing the composition of Annie's crystal to that of the Wall, asking her to hurry up. He later appears as the Survey Corps are preparing to locate the apparent breach in Wall Rose, asking Eren if he is healthy enough to ride on horseback. After the latter replies that he is, Moblit turns to Hange and claims that they should hurry, to which Hange replies that she will be with them momentarily. He is later shown listening to Hange as she instructs their squad to head towards Utgard Castle.
After the Survey Corps manage to recover the survivors of the attack on Utgard Castle, they regroup on top of the Wall. There, Hange asks for a status report on Ymir's condition, and Moblit replies that while her bleeding has ceased, a strange, vapor like substance is steaming from her wounds. He is present when Hannes arrives at on top of the Wall, claiming that there does not seem to be a breach anywhere. Hange remarks that with this news, the operation ought to be ended.
He is shown discussing the potential circumstances that may have led to the supposed "breach" with Hange shortly after. Hange expresses concern that Titans with the ability to transverse underground may exist, to which he replies that they would be immensely difficult to find.
Just moments after, Reiner Braun and Bertolt Hoover reveal their true identities, and proceed to transform into the Armored and Colossus Titans soon after. Moblit is among the soldiers forced back by the steam the Colossus Titan generates to protect itself. Hange quickly orders the soldiers move away from the Wall in an attempt to avoid the danger the Titan now poses. They narrowly dodge an attack, only for Ymir to wind up in the Colossus Titan's grasp. Shortly after, Moblit appears with Hange and Keiji as the soldiers storm the Titan in an attempt to kill it. However, it releases a massive blast of steam, forcing them to push back once again.
When the Colossus Titan throws himself off of the wall, causing a massive explosion, Moblit, is heavily injured and rendered incapable for some time. He is seen lying next to Keiji and Hange, glancing at them with what appears to be concern.
Moblit next appears with the rest of Hange's squad as the potential for Eren to use his hardening ability in order to plug up the breach in Wall Maria is being discussed. Hange reveals to them Nick was found murdered that morning.
In the ensuing flashback, Moblit and Hange are shown entering the complex where Nick's body is located. Hange is distraught, asking why Nick died, something to which Moblit replies that the Military Police were investigating. Hange is barred from entering the room where Nick's body lies by two Military Police members, Djel and Ralph, who claim that a burglary led to his death. When Hange protests, Djel grabs her by the jacket and questions her identity. Moblit separates the two, explaining that they are members of the Survey Corps. After leaving the scene, Moblit asks Hange if she thinks the MPs were responsible for Nick's death, to which Hange replies that they most definitely were.
After Hange's story, Moblit explains that the First Interior Squad is generally given tasks that limit their ability to inflict damage, though they may be able to infiltrate the Survey Corps in disguise. This puts the Corps in a potentially dangerous situation, with no clear certainty as to the enemy's identity.
Sometime later, Eren undergoes a number of tests in order to determine if his hardening ability will be effective-something which fuses him to his weakened Titan body, causing Hange and Mikasa Ackerman to pull him out. Hange asks Moblit to take a sketch of Eren's deformed face, causing him to question Hange's humanity. Hange is later seen holding the sketch he drew.
Moblit is seen after Hange leaves Djel and Ralph's prison cell. He addresses them, though they do not respond, instead entering another room.
Later on, Hange and Moblit sneak up on Roy and Peaure as they discuss the censorship imposed on them by the royal government. Peaure begins to take notes as Hange speaks to them, prompting Moblit to restrain him-something which causes Hange to remark that he is being too rough. Hange proceeds to ask the two reporters to "interview" them for one day.
The Survey Corps devise a plan to expose the corruption of the Military Police with the help of Flegel Reeves. The plan works, with the Military Police members revealing the circumstances surrounding the death of Dimo Reeves as they prepare to shoot Flegel. Moblit and Hange ambush them with vertical maneuvering equipment and incapacitate them. Hange injures her wrist while punching one of the MP's, causing Moblit to shout that she is being too reckless. He is later among those present when Flegel proclaims himself the new boss of the Reeves Company. As Hange, Roy, and Peaure argue over the dangers of publishing this story, Moblit stands behind Hange with a somewhat tense expression.
Moblit and Hange later travel to the rendezvous point with Levi's Squad, meeting up with Marlowe Freudenberg and Hitch Dreyse. Hange explains that they are friendly, and ask to be led to their squad. After discovering that their plan was working, Hange orders Moblit to take a message to Erwin. He later informs Erwin of Hange's plan to infiltrate the Reiss Chapel.Survey Corps during the expedition to the Shiganshina District. When the corps are caught in a battle between the Beast Titan and the Armored Titan, Moblit is seen with Hange's squad as they advance to finish off a weakened Reiner. However, when Bertolt is seen flying overhead and prepares to transform, Moblit cries out and reaches for Squad Leader Hange, referring to her as the commander, before the squad is caught in the explosive blast of Bertolt's transformation into the Colossus Titan. Once the blast dissipates, Squad Levi is unable to spot any of Hange's squad members and wonder if they are the only ones who survived. Soon after, Levi asks Erwin what happened to Hange's squad, and he replies that he does not know and that most of them seem to have been hit by the blast. Later in the Battle of Shiganshina, as Erwin Smith begins to lament the dwindling hopes of his dream, Moblit stands among the many fallen Survey Corps comrades in Erwin's mind, wanting to know if their deaths had meaning.
As Hange explains to a distraught Mikasa that there are hundreds of people she wishes to bring back to life, she remembers how just before being engulfed in the explosion caused by the Colossus Titan's transformation, Moblit pushed her into a well that shielded her, while he was killed.
Moblit was the executive officer of the fourth squad of the Survey Corps and, being a senior member within this division, he had survived many expeditions alongside his superior. He also possessed decent scientific abilities, serving as Hange's assistant during her experiments.
He also appeared to be very skilled at drawing, shown when Hange ordered him to make a portrait of Eren while he was being pulled out from his Titan body.
Moblit Berner's Statistics :
- Hange Zoë - Moblit acted as Hange's personal assistant and often supervised her throughout projects or helped her with certain tasks. He got easily tired of Hange's bold gestures, sometimes reprimanding her for her hazardous actions. Even so, he cared about her and in his final moments, put her safety over his.
- In an interview, Hajime Isayama mentioned that out of all the veterans of the Survey Corps, Moblit drinks the most due to his "unfortunate" position.
