Event descriptions preceded by "[NC]" are derived from spinoff material that is meant to take place in the canon universe but is not considered canon within the main storyline.

Prehistory

Year Event
1003 B1 Ymir Fritz comes across the "source of all organic material". Through this source, she gains the power of the Titans, becoming the Founding Titan.[1][2] With her powers, she is able to turn her subjects into mindless Titans that she can control.[3]

The Fritz family comes into power as the royal bloodline over humanity, destined to remain unbroken for the next 2,000 years.[4]

990 B1 For reasons unknown, Ymir Fritz dies 13 years after inheriting her power. Her "soul" is split between nine Titan inheritors, with the Founding Titan belonging to the Fritz family and the eight remaining Titans leading clans subservient to the Founding Titan. The Titans wage war against the nation of Marley, the ancient nation that dominated the land, taking control of the continent and establishing the nation of Eldia.[1] Those who inherit the power of the Titans are destined to die after 13 years as Ymir did due to a phenomena called the "Curse of Ymir".[5]
Unknown The Ackerman family, a non-Eldian bloodline and "byproducts of Titan science",[6] becomes the sword and shield of the royal family, remaining close to the monarchy for generations.[7]

Eventually, in-fighting breaks out between the various families subservient to the Fritz bloodline for control over the eight Titans, but the power of the Founding Titan maintains some balance in the land of Eldia.[8]

History

Year Event
Unknown - 743 The 145th King of the Fritz family eats a previous monarch, inheriting the Founding Titan and succeeding them as the monarch of Eldia. He decides to move the capital of Eldia to the island of Paradis and abandon the conflict between the eight other Titan houses. In the King's absence, the surviving people of Marley instigate a civil war against the Eldians. The Great Titan War begins.[9][8] The Marleyans succeed in stealing seven of the nine Titans possessed by Eldia, which they use to gain control of the continent. Eldia loses much of its territory, and the worldwide population is greatly reduced.[9][10]
743 The 145th King gathers most of the Fritz royal family to the island of Paradis, Eldia's last remaining undisputed territory.[11] Some Fritz royals disagree with the King's decision to abandon the war, and remain behind in Marley.[12] The King uses the Founding Titan to order tens of millions of Colossus Titans form the three concentric Walls Maria, Rose, and Sheena to protect humanity.[13] In order to stop the war, the 145th King sends a message to the people of Marley, demanding that the surviving Eldians must be left alone or the Wall Titans will "flatten the entire Earth".[14] Other wealthy citizens of Eldia join in the mass retreat, but only half of the ships sailing across the sea survive the journey, arriving at the island of Paradis.[10] The nation of Marley retains control of the world beyond the island of Paradis throughout the next century, living in refinement.[15] Those of the nation of Eldia who cannot or choose not to flee overseas become low-class citizens of Marley, forced to live in the Liberio Internment Zone separate from the Marleyan peoples[16] until Marley obtains the Founding Titan, after which Marley plans to turn the Eldian citizens into a Titan army.[17] The Great Titan War ends.

After gaining control over the mainland, the Marley government promotes the historical falsehood that the Eldian Empire had committed genocide and eugenic rape against the people of Marley and other non-Eldian races of the world for the past 1,700 years.[9] They furthermore spread the myth that Ymir Fritz had gained the Titan's power through a deal with the "Earth Devil".[1][2]

Once the Eldian refugees gather inside the Walls, King Fritz announces to the Fritz family in Marley that he has made a vow renouncing war to the Founding Titan ensuring that it will not be used to begin future conflicts.[18] The King uses the power of the Founding Titan to erase humanity's memories. The majority Eldian race successfully forgets their history, but minority groups not sharing the majority's common bloodline such as the Ackerman family and the Asian clan are unaffected by the mind wipe. Many of the minority groups swear to secrecy at the King's request and gain noble status,[19] but the Ackerman and Asian groups give up said status, turn against King Fritz, and are hunted down.[20]

For the safe-keeping of the Founding Titan, the royal family lives in hiding as the noble Reiss family while another bloodline takes the place of the Fritz family as a false monarchy.[21]

The 145th Fritz King, now the First Reiss King, creates an underground cavern where the Founding Titan can be passed on to successors within the royal family. Some time afterwards, a chapel is built above the entrance to the cavern.[22]

Plans are made for underground districts, but these plans are abandoned at the behest of the Church of the Walls.[23]

Unknown The Titan Chemistry Research Society is founded in Marley. After researching the nature of the Titans and the Eldians, they determine that the power of the Titans is carried across "paths" invisible to the eye, with all "paths" coordinating at the Founding Titan. The people of Marley rename the Founding Titan as the "Coordinate".[24]

Dimo Reeves sets up Eren and Historia to be taken by the First Interior Squad so that Rod Reiss can be located. Kenny arrives and captures Eren and Historia, killing Dimo Reeves.[236]

Hange and Erwin discuss the implications of Eren's dream, theorizing on the nature of Titans and humans with Titan power. Erwin is taken into Military Police custody after the Survey is framed for the murder of Dimo Reeves. Before departing, he declares Hange to be his successor should he be unable to return to service.[237]

Nine Days Squad Levi tracks the First Interior Squad to Stohess District.[238] Kenny Ackerman's squad battles Squad Levi.[239]

Hange convinces the Roy of the Berg Newspaper to report the truth of the First Interior Squad to the public and improve the Survey Corps’s reputation.[240]

Ten Days Hitch Dreyse and Marlowe Freudenberg join the Survey Corps's cause.[241]

The true intentions of the Military Police are revealed publicly in Trost District. Roy agrees to report the event to the rest of the public, changing the Survey Corps's reputation for the better.[242]

Erwin Smith is brought before King Fritz and the Assembly.[243] As they order him to the gallows, Anka Rheinberger enters the court bringing news that Wall Rose has fallen. When the nobles refuse to allow refugees into Wall Sheena, Darius Zackly intervenes, arresting the nobles and dethroning Fritz.[244]

Squad Levi attacks the headquarters of the First Interior Squad to learn of Eren and Historia's location.[245][246] Hange reunites with Squad Levi bringing news that King Fritz has been dethroned and the Survey Corps has been saved. Having learned of the history of the Reiss chapel, Hange suggests they should search there for Eren and Historia.[247][248]

Eren awakens in the Reiss Chapel underground, where Rod and Historia had taken him. Eren's receives the memories of Grisha's final hours.[249] Rod Reiss tells Eren and Historia the story of Grisha's arrival at the chapel and the destruction that ensued.[250]

Darius Zackly begins torturing nobles, learning of their immunity to the Founding Titan. Erwin Smith leads the Survey Corps to the Reiss Chapel.[251]

Eleven Days Squad Levi arrives at the Reiss chapel and battles with Kenny's Anti-Personnel Control Squad. Rod teaches Eren and Historia the history of the Reiss family, and Rod gives Historia the chance of reclaiming the Founding Titan from Eren.[252][253] After hearing of the nature of the Founding Titan, Kenny turns against Rod.[254] Historia refuses Rod's offer, choosing instead to free Eren. Rod Reiss drinks from the shattered Titan serum, becoming a mindless Titan. Squad Levi rescues Eren and Historia, and as the underground cavern collapses, Eren ingests an armor serum and shields Squad Levi.[255] Kenny Ackerman escapes the collapse, and his squad is killed.[256]

Rod Reiss's Titan heads for Orvud District. Erwin Smith reunites with Squad Levi, who head to Orvud to set up a method of defeating Rod Reiss.[257] Rod arrives at dawn, and his Titan is defeated by Historia.[258]

Kenny Ackerman is found by Levi outside of the collapsed cavern. He gives Levi a Titan serum he stole from Rod before the collapse, and he dies soon afterward.[259]

Twelve Days Historia Reiss is ceremonially crowned Queen of the Walls.[260]
Time After the Crowning of Historia Event - Year 850
Under Two Months The nobles from the Assembly are imprisoned and members of the Military take their places. Contraband formerly possessed by the First Interior Squad is used by the Survey Corps to create new technology,[261] such as the Thunder Spears.[262] Fragments of glowing stone from the Reiss Chapel underground are used for sources of light, increasing productivity and allowing for nighttime scouting missions to plot out a route to Shiganshina District.[263] Queen Historia brings many orphans from the Underground to the surface world for adoption.[264]

Eren's new hardening ability is used to create a Titan guillotine where Trost's outer gate once stood.[265]

The Survey Corps's increased popularity causes many young soldiers to enlist or reassign.[266]

Two Months A council of military leaders decides that Levi Ackerman should be entrusted with Kenny's Titan serum.[267]

Zeke arrives in Shiganshina District, meeting Reiner and Bertolt. After a battle with Reiner, he orders that rather than heading out to rescue Annie Leonhart, they will remain in Shiganshina District to await the arrival of the Survey Corps in order to retrieve the Founding Titan from Eren.[268]

Squad Levi visits Keith Shadis to learn of his involvement with Grisha Yeager. Keith tells them of his past with Grisha.[269]

Erwin Smith leads over one hundred soldiers of the Survey Corps on an expedition to Shiganshina under the cover of night.[270][271] Pieck, a quadrupedal Titan warrior, spies on their movements and reports it to the other warriors in Shiganshina.[272]

At dawn, the Survey Corps arrives in Shiganshina and Eren uses his hardening ability to seal the breach in the outer gate. Before the northern gate can be sealed, Zeke traps the Survey Corps in Shiganshina, starting a battle between the Titans and the Survey Corps.[273] As Levi leads the Survey Corps north of Wall Maria in an attack against Zeke, Eren and Reiner battle in their Titan forms.[274] During the battle, the Survey Corps attacks Reiner with Thunder Spears, destroying his nape and Reiner's head.[275] Reiner calls Bertolt in to initiate a last resort attack,[276] but Bertolt stops upon seeing Reiner injured. Armin Arlert attempts negotiation with Bertolt to no avail, and Bertolt transforms into the Colossus Titan, engulfing Hange Zoë, Moblit Berner, and several Survey Corps members in the explosive energy of the transformation.[277]

Eren is incapacitated after his attempt to stop the Colossus Titan's advance to the north Wall. Meanwhile, while Zeke bombards the Survey Corps to the north with a barrage of stones and boulders,[278] causing Commander Erwin Smith to lead a last ditch frontal assault into the line of fire as a distraction for Captain Levi's advance against Zeke. The recruits under Armin Arlert and Jean Kirstein's command are badly injured after attempting to battle the Colossus Titan.[279]

Commander Erwin's attack results in the complete annihilation of the cavalry, save for one soldier by the name of Floch. Levi attacks Zeke and defeats him, but Zeke is taken away by the Pieck. Levi begins in a desperate attack against Zeke's Titans while the last soldier searches the battlefield for other survivors.

Within the district, Armin notices a weakness in the Colossus Titan and chooses to exploit it, waking up Eren.[280] The other recruits attack Reiner, who has lost all memory of the previous events of the battle, and Sasha Blouse is injured. Hange returns to the battle to assist the recruits, and Mikasa defeats the Armored Titan. Armin Arlert sacrifices himself in an attack against the Colossus Titan, whom Eren defeats after leaving his Titan form.[281] After Zeke rescues Reiner, Eren notices that Armin barely survived the event and asks Levi for the Titan serum. However, Floch brings Erwin to Levi, creating a difficult choice as to who should be saved.[282] Ultimately it is decided by Levi that Armin will be given the serum. Armin, in his new Titan form, eats Bertolt Hoover, and Erwin Smith dies.[283] After Armin is told of the events leading to his receiving of the serum, Eren, Mikasa, Levi, and Hange investigate the basement of the Yeager household, where they discover three books left by Grisha detailing his past in Marley and his knowledge of the Eldian-Marleyan conflict.[284][15]

After investigating the basement, the nine surviving members of the Survey Corps return to Trost District.[285] Eren and Mikasa are detained for assaulting their superiors. In his dreams, Eren begins to see his father's memories of his arrival at Paradis and realizes that Dina was the Titan that killed his mother.[286] He later recounts his dreams and memories to Armin, who transcribes them in a book while visiting Eren's cell.[287][288]

Shortly after the return of the Survey Corps, Queen Historia Reiss arrives in Trost District and reads Ymir's letter. Eren and Mikasa are released from their imprisonment early with Commander-in-Chief Darius Zackly's approval, and a meeting is held to discuss the findings from the basement. Eren realizes a loophole in the Founding Titan involving touching a royal-blooded Titan as he did with Dina, but chooses not to speak of it out of concern for Historia's fate.[289][290] The meeting concludes with the decision to make the basement revelations public knowledge, distributed by the Berg Newspapers.[291]

The nine survivors of the battle of Shiganshina District are honored in ceremony by Queen Historia.[292]

Over Two Months The Titan guillotine in Trost District is used to clear all Titans from Wall Maria.[293]

Upon the warriors' return to Marley, the government postpones their mission to obtain the Founding Titan. When the loss of two Titans becomes publicly known, the Mid-East Allied Forces declare war on Marley.[294]

Ymir is restrained and eaten by Galliard, brother of Marcel, who inherits her Jaws. He inherits Ymir's memories, but not Marcel's.[295]

Time After the Battle of Trost Event - Year 851
Unknown Near the end of the winter months, it is announced that Wall Maria has been made completely Titan-free. Due to the large influx of Titans over the course of five years, very few Titans remain beyond the Walls on Paradis.[293][296]
One Year Eldian citizens begin to repopulate Shiganshina District. The Survey Corps sets out beyond Wall Maria for the first time in six years, reaching the borderline and the shores of the ocean.[297]
Year Event
851-854 Marley slowly gains control over the seas in its war with the Mid-East Allied Forces, though half of the outdated navy is lost through the course of the war.[298] Meanwhile, the Allies develop anti-Titan artillery to gain a significant advantage on land conflicts.[299]

Over the course of three years, 32 scouting ships are sent from Marley to the island of Paradis. None of the ships return.[300]

854 Marley's war with the Mid-East Allied Forces culminates at Fort Slava, a coastal fortress. The warriors under Marleyan command besiege the fort but are unable to send in any Titans due to the anti-Titan artillery present. Gabi, one of the warrior cadets, succeeds in putting the weaponry out of commission, giving Galliard the chance to enter his Titan form, "Jaws", and charge the fortress' defenses[301] alongside Pieck's "Cartman". Zeke uses his Beast Titan's power to drop parachuting Eldians over Fort Slava, turning them into Titans as an airstrike. Reiner's Armored Titan joins Galliard in destroying the anti-Titan artillery present at Fort Slava, and the Beast Titan tosses artillery rounds at the nearby Mid-East fleet, but the Armored Titan is heavily damaged in the attack.[302]

The Mid-East Allied Forces sign a peace treaty with Marley, the victors of the four-year war.[303] A meeting is convened afterwards to discuss the global reaction to the Armored Titan's defeat, and Commander Magath concludes that the technological progress of the world is rendering the power of the Titans obsolete. Zeke proposes that the Founding Titan must be reclaimed as soon as possible for Marley to gain full mastery of the Titans while Marley develops conventional weaponry to boost its outdated military.[304]

Zeke is informed of the 32 ships that have gone missing near Paradis. Recalling the four Titans present on the island, Zeke proposes that Eren Yeager's Attack Titan as well as another individual with the power of the Titans are responsible for the ships' disappearances.[305] Some time after the conclusion of the war, the forces of Marley return to their homeland.[306]
